PETER MATLOWA

Peter Matlowa is a 25-year-old skateboarder and self-taught photographer from Vereeniging, south of Johannesburg. His work delves into themes of identity, masculinity, and the sense of community and belonging within society. Having lived in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and his hometown in the Vaal, Peter has documented various pockets of skateboarding culture during his travels. This has allowed him to connect with a diverse range of people while fueling his passion for storytelling through photography.

As an artist deeply passionate about both photography and skateboarding, Peter is driven to explore and capture the unique intersection of these two worlds. For him, skateboarding is more than just a sport—it's a way of life that transcends borders and unites people across cultures. In South Africa, skateboarding has flourished as a form of self-expression and resilience, especially in communities where creativity and innovation emerge in response to socio-economic challenges.

Through his lens, Peter captures the raw, authentic essence of these moments, telling stories that reflect the heart of South African skate culture and its influence on identity and community.
